Brookspeare Music

guest musician
Brookspeare Music has recorded strings for Marvel, Ubisoft & Inkle Studios video games, films like “Strange But True” & “Lapwing”, series such as “The Spanish Princess” and “Hetty Feather”, and the West End production of “Upstart Crow”.

It was founded in 2013 by sound engineer Richard Brooker and cellist Rachel Shakespeare, bringing together their two passions - string chamber music & high quality recordings.Richard has worked in the sound industry for over 30 years, specialising in sound design. Theatre credits include "Dreamgirls", "Funny Girl", "The Bodyguard" & "Bend It Like Beckham". Richard has also mixed numerous live music television productions including the BBC Proms & BBC Glastonbury Festival alongside engineering for live theatre and music shows.Rachel graduated with First-Class Honours from the Royal Northern College Of Music. She founded Leos Strings in 2008 and co-ordinates and performs in string ensembles for private events and international tours.Brookspeare Music's musicians are hand selected for their talent, sound, professionalism & sense of humour (they spend a lot of time together, it’s important they all get along!). The musicians are happy to discuss the music with each composer, giving advice or answering questions that may arise. Each instrument (x2 violins, x1 viola & x1 cello) is close mic’d with two microphones and there's also a stereo room pair set up.They perform without a conductor: Rachel directs from the cellist’s chair and plays from the string score on her iPad.Although all musicians are classically trained and graduates of the top UK Conservatoires, they’re also very experienced at performing contemporary styles of music. They're at ease performing with or without click tracks.

I brought a decently tricky string quartet arrangement for a pop song. The environment was relaxed, very friendly, and highly professional and time-efficient. I would have been happy to use their first pass on a record. With minimal direction from me (to which everyone was responsive and receptive), we recorded three great takes of the arrangement, allowing me to pick and choose the sections from each take that were most adaptable to the existing material. The recording setup was clean and effective, rendering a mix that sounded great simply dropping the unprocessed stems into a DAW. All round it was a fun, friendly, efficient session with a great quartet. I’d love to work with Brookspeare Music again in the future.

Brookspeare Music consistently provide top quality performances and professionalism and as a result have become my go-to string group for projects ranging from contemporary concert music to video game and television scores. Whether it’s a last minute solo overdub or a full day’s recording they always strive for the highest musical standards. A pleasure to work with.

I was blown away by the quality they provided in such a short amount of recording time. Beautiful performance and a very professional sounding recording. Communicating with Rachel was easy and reliable and I couldn’t have found a better place to record my music at. Kudos to these amazing musicians! I’m very much looking forward to our next collaboration!
