Working as a Session Musician at Musiversal: An Inside Look

Living the life of a session musician can be dynamic, challenging, and rewarding. At Musiversal, our mission is two-fold: offer studio access to professional musicians for producers, composers, and songwriters; and to give musicians stability and freedom to record music at the peak of their creativity for the best possible results.

The experience of working as a session musician at Musiversal comes with a unique combination of artistic growth, creative collaboration, and professional stability. Through the eyes of three of our talented session musicians - Ally Rozario, Gonzalo Eyzaguirre, and Bruno Migliari - we explore what it's like to work on this innovative platform, the opportunities it provides, and the challenges they’ve overcome along the way.

A Day in the Life

We take immense pride in offering an exceptional level of flexibility to all musicians. Traditional studio work often requires coordinating the schedules of an entire team, which naturally limits flexibility for everyone involved.

At Musiversal, musicians have the freedom to choose the working hours that suit them best. Whether it's early morning recording sessions or evening sessions for artists who find their creative sparks later in the day. Our approach empowers recording artists to shape their schedules. This flexibility allows them to balance their creative work seamlessly with their personal lives.

For this reason, a day in the life of a Musiversal looks different for all musicians. As we will see, Ally, Gonzalo, and Bruno all have their own daily routines and preferred working hours.

Ally Rozario, vocalist, begins her mornings with yoga or a workout to get in the best headspace for the day. "I wake up at about 7:00-7:30 AM", she tells us. "After breakfast and coffee, I head to my studio, prepare files, print lyrics and scores, and do vocal warm-ups".

Her sessions, which typically start at 9:30 AM, can involve singing for 3-4 projects back-to-back. "Once I’m done, I spend time with my family and review any new files in the evening", she adds.

For Gonzalo Eyzaguirre, drummer, the day begins at 8:00 AM. After breakfast, he rides his bike for 10 minutes to his studio where he checks messages from his clients and prepares his drum kit for the sessions of the day. “I typically do 11 sessions a day, which makes it quite intense but also very rewarding and challenging”, he explains.

Bruno Migliari, bassist, follows a strict morning routine. "I wake up at 6:40, hit the gym at 7:00 so I can be musically functional by 9:00”. Beyond being one of the top requested musicians on the roster, he also has management duties for the Musiversal musicians. Before lunch, Bruno adds, he spends his time practicing and studying, as well as doing his management duties. Around 2 pm he’s ready to record with his clients for the day - usually eight per day.

Despite the busy schedule, he balances his studio work with live gigs over the weekends, showcasing his flexibility as a session musician and live performer.

Stability and Structure in an Unpredictable Industry

The music industry is often unpredictable and unstable, but Musiversal offers its musicians much-needed stability. "It’s more stable and secure than many session gigs", says Ally. She continues to explain how not having to search for new clients makes life as a session musician much easier as it allows you to focus solely on the music.

Gonzalo echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the unique pace and structure that Musiversal offers. "The number of sessions I complete daily is unlike anything I’ve experienced before", he says. “Additionally, the connection with artists during live remote sessions adds another layer to the experience, as the recording process is guided by the client”.

For Bruno, Musiversal’s model resembles traditional in-studio recordings, with added efficiency. “The real-time interaction between musicians and users compensates for the geographical distance and obliterates the time gap between recording tracks and user's approval of the material", he explains.

While joining the recording session via live link is optional for our users, it’s highly encouraged. Not only would you, the user, get the ability to provide feedback in real-time and learn how to collaborate with musicians and communicate your ideas, but it’s also a unique experience to hear your music come to life in real-time in the hands of a true professional.

Expanding Horizons Through Unique Opportunities

Working with Musiversal has exposed these musicians to a diverse range of styles and genres and music from all over the world. Bruno highlights the educational value for all musicians working across several genres. "Within 70 minutes, I can go from British prog rock to a Bollywood soundtrack", he says. "It’s incredibly educational and has made me a better musician”.

Ally shares her thoughts, stating “The biggest opportunity is working with musicians from all over the world and experiencing different styles”. She adds that collaborating with Musiversal users served as her first step into the world of game and film music - a field she had long been interested in exploring.

Gonzalo also points to the networking potential of the platform. "The number of people you meet and connect with is remarkable," he notes. "It’s been more beneficial than in-person networking”. He continues by saying the networking and the global reach of Musiversal have opened many doors for him that have presented him with new opportunities.

Memorable Moments and Career Highlights

With so many sessions under their belts, Gonzalo, Ally, and Bruno have had countless memorable experiences since joining Musiversal, they tell us when asked to share some of their favorite moments.

For Gonzalo, a client’s emotional testimony stands out in particular. “A client once shared that he had been battling depression, and Musiversal played a crucial role in helping him overcome it. He told me it allowed him to fulfill dreams he had held onto for many years”, he tells us. "It’s inspiring to know our work has such a profound impact".

Ally recalls a composer from Boston who was so inspired by her voice that he instantly sat down and wrote lyrics to one of his songs. "He booked another session just to share that", she says. "It was truly wonderful to hear".

Bruno cherished his first Musiversal session with composer Thomas Feurer in October 2021. “It was a double bass session on a jazz piece, with the bass line completely written out. His music was pleasantly challenging, his session material was flawless and he was very enjoyable to work with" he remembers.

Professional Growth and Development

While every musician on the roster is highly professional and exceptionally talented, there’s always something new to learn when collaborating with different artists daily. Ally shares that working at Musiversal has helped her refine her vocal practice, master new techniques, improve her vocal arranging skills, and grow into a more confident improviser.

Gonzalo attributes his improvement as a drummer and a recording engineer to the platform. “Due to the sheer volume of sessions I’ve done, my timing, precision with the metronome, and ability to adapt to various music styles have all reached new levels, along with my technical understanding of recording processes”.

Bruno mentioned three ways working with Musiversal has impacted his professional growth. “On an aesthetic level, it has helped me expand my musical vocabulary immensely. On a technical level, it has helped me keep my technical skills and sight-reading chops on both electric bass and double bass in high gear; and on a human level, it has helped me become more understanding and tolerant of other people's perspectives on music in general.”

The collaborative nature of session recordings is at the heart of the Musiversal experience, which we’ll dive into next.

Collaboration: The Heart of Musiversal

Collaboration is a cornerstone of the Musiversal experience and serves as a vital connection between musicians and users. This collaborative nature ensures that every session delivers something unique and personal, tailored to the user’s needs and creative visions.

Because the platform attracts a diverse community of users, ranging from seasoned music producers and professional composers to passionate hobbyists, and even those exploring the world of session musicians for the very first time, this diversity enriches the Musiversal ecosystem, making every interaction a fresh and inspiring experience for all participants.

When asked what they enjoy most about collaborating with the users, Ally, Gonzalo, and Bruno all gave their unique perspectives on what’s most important to them.

Ally tells us that she especially enjoys the creative freedom users often give her. “I enjoy when clients trust me with my creativity and allow me to do what I do, while still being involved in the creation process and advising me on what they would like to hear. This is a true moment of collaboration”, she shares.

Gonzalo highlights the dynamic exchange of ideas. “What I enjoy most is receiving feedback directly from the recordings. It gives me a clearer understanding of how to approach and deliver exactly what’s needed for each session, making the collaboration more efficient and rewarding”.

Bruno values the human touch in every session. “The opportunity to create music together”, he starts. “There's always that human factor coming into the equation, the ‘player's touch’. I'm often asked to do additional takes giving ‘my own interpretation’ of the bass line, or simply providing an altogether different idea for the bass part.

He continues to say that some collaborations have been so successful, that he’s been given co-writing credits for several songs; he’s been asked to co-write music from scratch as well as being invited to perform with the artists live in New York when he was visiting the city.

Tools and Support: Enabling Excellence

Musiversal equips its musicians with tools and support that streamline the entire creative and collaborative process. The Muse app, for instance, allows users to participate with both audio and video during every session so they can provide immediate feedback. Gonzalo appreciates how handy and user-friendly Muse is for sound management.

Bruno highlights Slack, in particular as a useful tool that enhances the Musiversal experience. “The ability to communicate with the staff and the whole roster in real-time through Slack is super helpful in solving problems that may arise during a session, clarifying doubts about protocol and generally sharing experiences are certainly very helpful – all the while being instrumental in creating a sense of community”.

Ally shares this sentiment and the importance of community and communication with various team members. “The biggest support here is the team that is always in touch and ready to help you. You can feel that they believe in you”.

Overcoming Challenges

While rewarding, being a session musician is not without its challenges. Ally has had to adapt to genres she was less familiar with prior to working with Musiversal, such as country, rock, and electronic music. ”I focused on listening to songs in those genres and analyzing vocal projection, melody movement, and harmony, and then I tried to apply that knowledge while recording”, she says.

Gonzalo faces complex pieces and tight deadlines but credits his experience and practice for helping him deliver quality results on time.

Bruno, who completes 40 sessions a week, has learned to handle occasional frustrations from users. ”Although a rare occurrence, facing those rare situations has helped me become more self-controlled and understanding, and perhaps more empathic”, he says.

Flexibility and Freedom

As mentioned earlier, one of the core principles of Musiversal is to offer flexibility and freedom to both users and musicians on the roster. “In a traditional session gig, you depend on the studio and other members of the project, which means you have to follow their schedule as well. Here, you primarily rely on your own timing and schedule it according to your preferences”, Ally tells us. Having control over her own schedule allows her to spend quality time with her family and friends.

Bruno also mentions the importance of flexibility and how it’s “priceless” to him.

“Working within a time frame that fits my schedule allows me to keep a ‘healthy diet’ of both studio sessions and live gigs. And doing those sessions from the comfort of my home, having all my instruments and gear at my disposal just makes it that much more enjoyable.”

Gonzalo points to how musicians often face demanding schedules with tours and other commitments, and how the team at Musiversal is highly understanding of these challenges. He appreciates how flexible Musiversal is in accommodating potential time and scheduling constraints, which is not the freedom you have in traditional session gigs.

User Feedback: The Ultimate Reward

Positive user feedback is a recurring theme in the musicians’ experiences that makes the work particularly rewarding. Ally says “It’s always nice to receive feedback about how my work complements or positively changes the client's song, and to hear that I have many good ideas they would never have considered.”

Being a drummer, Gonzalo appreciates the feedback that praises him for his musicality, something often overlooked or taken for granted by percussionists. He adds, "Clients often praise my precision and willingness to contribute ideas, which makes a real difference.”

For Bruno, repeat users are the ultimate accolade. “A good chunk of my slots are booked by ‘regulars’, and at this point, I have recorded several complete albums by many of them”, he says and continues saying this is not something he takes for granted.

Musiversal: A Platform Unlike Any Other

When asked if they’d recommend Musiversal, the musicians’ responses are unanimous.

“Absolutely!” Gonzalo says. “The professional work is top-notch, and the service is fast and efficient. If you were to hire a session musician in person or rent a studio, it would cost much more, making Musiversal a great alternative. What sets Musiversal apart from other platforms is its ability to offer a stable income for musicians, live remote sessions, and unlimited recording sessions for clients.”

Ally would "definitely" recommend Musiversal and continues to say that the people she meets aren’t just talented creators, but “interesting people with great personalities”.

Bruno was convinced, when he first started at Musiversal, that this way of recording music is the future; now he’s convinced it’s the present and calls Musiversal a “state-of-the-art remote recording platform” and “a game-changer in this niche. ”Take a look at this short clip where Bruno talks about working at Musiversal.
